“Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood.” – George Orwell, 1984.
This statement holds true for every part of the society that we live in. This was relevant around 70 years back as well, when 1984 was published. It’s true that whichever age you’re in, whatever it is that you’re doing in life, for you the most important will always be to be understood. This is important for a fulfilling life. It’s not just this one statement, but 1984 showcases dystopia in the society that it will leave an impression on you and you will relate it to most of what you observe even today. 1984 showcases signs of warning against the Soviets. It’s about both the key characters and their differing views on the Party. The crux of the book is how the Government controls the society. It still does, or so is perceived. The opinions and situations are so deep rooted in this George Orwell novel that it is still a great book to talk about. This is the main reason why this is still used to pick topics by essay writers. We will talk about four such topics from 1984. Women vs. Men – A never ending battle: This battle of what role a woman should play in a society is a never ending one. It is so depicted from the book itself. This is the most common and always relevant topic that can easily be picked to write an essay. One can talk about a lot of factors that still exist. A lot of perceptions that have been changed. There are points that can be picked from that era and can be compared to the situation of today. Another popular topic is about feminism and how society tries to talk about it and bring it in every aspect. Feminism can easily be clubbed with this topic. This issue exists from country to country, from big corporations to small corporations and even in the entertainment world. Power and Position – The levels at which men can go to sustain this: We all at some level look for power. Some of us get it easily and some have to strive for it. There are some who fight for a position and power both and try to change the world in their own way. How power comes into action and what tactics are used by the powerful men to sustain their position has been very finely defined in the book. This will leave you kind of disturbed at the end of it. You can also always point out how a position with control like this will make anyone take decisions that are not always appreciated or liked by others. Freedom and Security – Can it ever co-exist? – According to Orwell’s dystopian society freedom and security do not walk the same path. They are shyly striving to co-exist but openly try to walk into each other’s space. If you are free to do whatever you want to do you may not have the full security. If you need the security of money, space and food then you must follow some rules and regulations. Technology and its Potential – This topic is not very much explored but technology in that era was quite a trend and students can have fun reading and writing about it. Was the technology back then welcomed with open arms? What was the impact of the technology on the society? This is an uncommon topic and there is a lot to talk about. This is just a collation of four topics that are quite important and there is a lot to talk on 1984. One can pick a topic and write in different styles. These topics are well suited for debatable style of writing, or picking on side and defending it all through.
